Private-well water treatment

Start with the problem you can see, smell or test

Bacteria, iron, manganese, sulphur, sediment, hardness and acidic water require different treatment. Choose the closest symptom below and we will point you towards the correct next step.

This is a starting point, not a final diagnosis. We will tell you when a water test is required before treatment is selected.

Recommended next step

Order a water analysis

Testing identifies the actual water problems and prevents the wrong equipment being installed.

Why testing matters

Clear-looking water can still require treatment

Bacteria, nitrate, nitrite, acidity and dissolved minerals may not be visible. Conversely, staining or odour does not always reveal the full cause.

A treatment recommendation should account for the full analysis, household demand, pump flow, pressure and the available installation space.

Arrange Water Analysis
Microbiological Total coliforms, E. coli and other bacterial indicators.
Metals & minerals Iron, manganese, hardness and overall mineral content.
Chemical indicators pH, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium and conductivity.
Physical symptoms Odour, colour, sediment and treatment history.

A straightforward treatment process

1

Describe the symptoms

Tell us what you see, smell or have found in a previous test.

2

Test the water

Obtain the current chemical and microbiological results where required.

3

Confirm flow and usage

Treatment is sized around the house, well pump and peak water demand.

4

Select the treatment sequence

Pre-filtration, media, softening and UV are placed in the correct order.

5

Common questions

Private-well treatment FAQs

Can I choose a filter based only on the staining or smell?

Symptoms are useful, but they are not enough for final equipment selection. Concentrations, pH, hardness, bacteria and water demand can change the treatment required.

Does UV remove iron, manganese or sediment?

No. UV disinfects water but does not physically remove minerals or particles. Feed water may need sediment, iron or manganese treatment before it enters the UV chamber.

Can one system treat iron, manganese and hardness?

In some water conditions, a multi-function media system can treat several problems. Suitability and capacity must be confirmed from the analysis and household demand.

Is a carbon filter enough for sulphur smell?

Carbon can help in some circumstances, but high or continuous hydrogen-sulphide loading can exhaust carbon quickly. The cause and concentration should be established first.

Can Puresoft help with the Well Water Grant?

Puresoft can help with water testing, treatment recommendations, quotations, filtration work and supporting documentation. Eligibility and approval remain the responsibility of the relevant local authority.
