A sediment cartridge is not an iron-and-manganese treatment system.

It may catch particles that have already oxidised, but dissolved iron or manganese normally passes through and continues causing staining.

Why the full analysis matters

The iron figure alone does not select the system

A treatment vessel must be matched to the complete water chemistry and the volume of water it will process. The same iron concentration may require a different approach where pH, hardness, manganese, ammonia or organic matter differ.

Important: Ecomix is not automatically suitable for every private well. Very high contaminant levels, unsuitable pH, sulphur or heavy sediment may require additional or alternative treatment.

Every filter must be positioned for a reason

The final sequence is determined by the analysis. A typical installation may include some or all of the stages below.

1 Well pump and pressure vessel Provides the flow and pressure required by the treatment system.
2 Coarse sediment protection Used where sand, grit or larger particles could foul the valve.
4 Fine filtration and UV Added where bacteria control or final polishing is required.

Keep salt in the brine tank

The Ecomix system relies on salt regeneration. Running without salt prevents the media from being properly restored.

Use suitable tablet salt

Clean water-softener salt reduces bridging, sludge and contamination inside the brine tank.

Check regeneration and drainage

A blocked drain, incorrect programming or injector problem can cause staining to return.

Service the Clack valve

Periodic inspection keeps the injector, seals, spacers and flow controls operating correctly.

Retest where water changes

Private-well chemistry can change over time. New staining or odour may require an updated analysis.

Iron and manganese FAQs

Can I identify iron and manganese from the colour of the stain?

Orange or reddish-brown staining commonly indicates iron, while black or dark deposits commonly indicate manganese. A laboratory test is still needed because both may be present together and the concentrations determine treatment.

Will a water softener remove iron and manganese?

A standard softener may tolerate only limited amounts under suitable water conditions and should not be assumed to solve an iron-or-manganese problem. Puresoft uses specialist media systems where the analysis supports that approach.

Can one filter remove iron, manganese and hardness?

Yes, in suitable conditions an Ecomix system can treat iron, manganese, hardness and certain additional impurities in one vessel. The full analysis must be reviewed before confirming suitability and capacity.

Why does the system need salt?

Salt is used during the automatic regeneration cycle to restore the ion-exchange and treatment capacity of the Ecomix media. It is not simply a sediment backwash filter.

Will the filter remove sulphur or rotten-egg smells?

Sulphur requires separate assessment. Some odour may be associated with other water-quality issues, but hydrogen sulphide should not be assumed to be treated by an iron-and-manganese system.

How often does the filter regenerate?

The Clack valve meters actual water usage and regenerates according to the programmed capacity. Frequency depends on the water analysis, household usage, vessel size and system settings.

How long does Ecomix media last?

Media life varies significantly with water chemistry, contaminant loading, regeneration quality and household usage. Regular salt supply and servicing are essential; the media should be assessed rather than replaced on a fixed date alone.
